The Educational Life of Betsy Devos

It is very well known that earlier this year Donald Trump assumed his role as president. It is also well know that several months before he became president, Donald Trump nominated Betsy DeVos as his Secretary of Education. Earlier this year, the Senate voted her into office. There are very good reasons that Trump chose her. Devils certainly aren’t a newbie on the educational scene. Prior to her nomination she had spent more than twenty years leading the national school reform movement.

Her primary objective has always been to break down needless bureaucracy, heighten the educational experience of underserved students, and to give school choice to families of all social status. Although Betsy Devos was content with her former leadership standing, she is incredibly honored and delighted with this new role. She is looking forward to working with the president on their shared educational visions. Read more about their foundation at dbdvfoundation.org

Devos was born and raised in Michigan where most of her labors in this area have taken place. After graduating from Holland Christian High School, she attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids where she graduated with a B.A. Michigan-based, privately held investment and management firm. Until recently, Devos also chaired both the American Federation for Children and The Philanthropy Roundtable. In the past, she has also served on the boards of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the American Enterprise Institute, Kids Hope USA, and Mars Hill Bible Church.

The first of these is an educational organization that seeks to empower low-income families and to give them free choice in selecting whatever school they want. As busy a woman as she is, Devos is also very active in her community. In the past she served on the boards of ArtPrize, American Enterprise Institute, Foundation for Excellence in Education, and the DeVos Institute for Arts Management at the University of Maryland. Devos’ relationship with politics is a years-long. Throughout the decades she has been elected chairman of the Michigan Republican Party four times.
